Aladdin’s Cave

Visiting Kathryn Weight's Nelson Bay studio is like entering Aladdin's Cave.  It's a treasure trove of texture and colour: of books, artworks, cut glass, precious metals, tools and art supplies.  It's a little bit vintage, a whole lot eclectic and comes with a welcoming lick from her beautiful old staffy, Boyd.

Kathryn says: Part of what I do is upcycle and recycle items that I can turn into mozaics or jewellery . . and at op shops and garage sales, I see things that need to be rescued and given a new home so my house and garden are full of bits and pieces.

She is a collector. A saver. A fossicker. A creative force.  Kathryn paints in acrylics, watercolours and oils; draws in pastels and with the Derwent coloured pencils she was given when she was twelve. She mozaics and sculpts and refinishes furniture; designs jewellery using copper and silver, pearls and glass beads.  She creates new pieces and gives new life to the old.
